Mapes Furniture has a lot of heritage in the mid-Michigan area. The building in downtown Sunfield is really a very historic location. Becky Calabro, store manager and daughter of current owner Larry Mapes continues the family tradition of dedicated service. The personal shopping experience found at Mapes is just one reason customers have returned for generations.
J.H. Bera founded what is now known as Mapes Furniture in 1892 in the two-story brick building he built. The store was originally called Bera Furniture and also housed an undertaking enterprise. At that time it wasn't uncommon for furniture stores and funeral chapels to be linked together. The business was later renamed Bera & Mapes Furniture in 1915, several years after Harry Mapes, Bera's son-in-law, joined Bera in the furniture store business. It wasn't until 1934 that the store was renamed Mapes Furniture.
| |  | | Larry Mapes and his brother, Jack, were behind the growth of the furniture business throughout the last century as it expanded its sales area across mid-Michigan. The store makes regular deliveries to Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing and many other small towns in between. |
